Job Description
Greater Los Angeles Health Care System (GLA) seeks a full-time board eligible or board-certified physician in Thoracic Surgery, who is a surgical scientist actively engaged in surgical basic science research. Candidates must be able to teach medical students and residents and will be expected to see patients in the clinic, perform general thoracic surgery operations, and take call.

Responsibilities

This position is in the Thoracic Surgery, Surgical & Perioperative Care Service of the VA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA.

Surgical expertise required includes bronchoscopy (rigid and flexible), UGI endoscopy, basic and advanced thoracoscopy, complex benign and malignant esophageal surgery, basic open and advanced minimally-invasive lung resections, chest wall and mediastinal surgical procedures, as well as intensive pre- and post-operative surgical care (ICU care). The candidate must attain a California Fluoroscopy Supervisor's license to perform intraoperative fluoroscopy. The board eligible or board certified general surgeon must have experience in thoracic surgery with an academic focus as evident by targeted publications, presentations, and active major research funding.

The academic duties include running an active surgical science laboratory in the areas of mesothelioma, lung, and/or esophageal cancer and training and mentoring residents and medical students in research and clinical activities. Administrative duties include the supervision of clinical care, laboratory work, and academic oversight of investigative research by trainees.

Duties Include, But Not Limited To The Following
Provides care of Veteran patients in the Thoracic Surgery Service;
Develops clinical, educational, and research programs for the service in meeting measured performance objectives, cross-service coordination, and in affiliation with the University of California at Los Angeles;
Ensures quality assurances of the service and the delivery of healthcare by participating in service, careline, and institutional peer reviews; gathering and responding to reports of contact, incident reports, signed statements, and customer service complaints; and, participating in root cause analyses;
Participates in various committees, including surgical operations and peer review committees, morbidity and mortality and other required Careline and institutional assigned committees;
Plans and carries out the procedures necessary to complete the work assignment and handles problems and corrects errors in accordance with established protocols or accepted guidelines and clinical and surgical research practices.
